15th ANNIVERSARY AND THE RIGHT TO BE YOU DVD

Rights of People with Learning Disabilities – DVD Premiere

A DVD made by  people with learning disabilities was shown for the first time at the House of Commons on 29 September 2005.

People with learning disabilities, from Ealing Consortium, commissioned and wrote the script for the DVD, and had the final say in the editing. They wanted other people with learning disabilities to be aware of their rights in areas such as housing, health, and travel.  The DVD will also be used for staff training and informing the general public.

Frena French presents the first copy of the new DVD to Stephen Pound, MP

Stephen Pound, MP, said that he was delighted that Ealing Consortium supported people to speak up for their rights, and especially pleased that the DVD told people about their right to vote.

Evelyn Baptiste, one of the team who made and appeared in the DVD said, “It made me feel very proud to be a part of this film.” The DVD Team thanked Karen Hamilton of LBV Television who produced the DVD.

The DVD was produced as Ealing Consortium is celebrating 15 years of providing services across West London. Nigel Turner, Chief Executive, said:

It sends a shiver down my spine now, to recall the old Victorian institutions where people with learning disabilities were incarcerated, and the attitudes that having those institutions around used to fuel in society at large.

Over the last few years especially we have seen people breaking free of so many of the things which used to hold them back, and playing a full role in their community.

Our vision is that people lead lives which are truly their own.

Right from the beginning Ealing Consortium realised that the starting point for any service for people with learning disabilities is that they are ordinary citizens with the same rights and responsibilities as any other citizen.”

The DVD - called “The Right to be You” - is available from Ealing Consortium on 020 8354 5900 or info@ealing.org.uk
